Girona and Besalú are two cities with a magnificent heritage with the footprints of its medieval past.

Just over 1 hour away from Barcelona is the city of Girona. Although founded by the Romans, it was especially during the Middle Ages that the city experienced one of the great moments of its history. Good part of the preserved monuments are examples.

In this tour we will walk through the narrow and labyrinthine alleys of the Barri Vell, the landscape of a thousand years of stories and legends.

From the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, located outside the walls and which housed an important community of Benedictine monks, we enter the historic quarter. Even outside the ancient Roman walls, we will find theArab Baths and the Basilica of Sant Feliu. We will continue later until we reach the Cathedral, without any doubt the most impressive building in Girona.

The Cathedral is a mixture of styles that range from the spectacular access staircase from the Baroque period, to the cloister and the old Romanesque bell tower, passing through an interior that boasts of being the widest Gothic nave in Europe. We will also visit the Cathedral Museum, where the famous Tapestry of Creationis located, a masterpiece of medieval textile art.

The Jewish Quarter of Girona is one of the best reserve in Spain.

After the Catedral, we’ll continue our tour in El Call, the former Jewish Quarter. In theHistory of the Jewish Museum we will learn about the details of the community of Girona, in which the famous rabbi Moses ben Nahman, founder of the Kabbalistic School of Girona, lived.

Por último y a través del entramado de calles donde vivieron caballeros, artesanos y burgueses, llegaremos al corazón comercial de la Girona actual, la Rambla de la Libertad y la Plaza de la Independencia, también llamada de San Agustín.

After the tour we are having time for lunch and, why not, tasting a xuxo, the most typical pastry of Girona, or an ice-cream at Rocambolesc, the ice cream shop that the Roca brothers, owners of “El Celler de Can Roca”, a 3 Michelin star restaurant chosen on several occasions as one of the best restaurants in the world, run in the center of the city

Besalú is considered one of the nicest towns of Catlalonia.

At about 40 kilómetros of Girona there’s Besalú, also famous because if tis medieval heritage and specially because of its magnificent bridge to acces to the historical section.

Besalú was the main city of a county in the 9th Century, and during the 13th and 14th Centuries housed ine of the most important Jewish comunities in Catalonia.

The most remarkable piece of its Jewish legacy is the existence of a micvé, used for ritual purification baths. (Possibility of visiting if you are interested).

From the Plaza del Mercadal, we will reach the neighborhood of San Pedro, presided by the church of the old Benedictine monastery, an example of the medieval wealth of Besalú.

After a walk around the alleys of Besalú, we’ll be back to Barcelona.
