Montserrat Mountain is one of those places where nobody can feel apart. Among its mountains, there’s the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat, the most famous sanctuary in Catalonia.
But Montserrat is rather more than that.
Over two million pilgrims visit Montserrat in a year. To them, there are the lovers of nature, climbing or art. And all those who, in our own way, worship our patroness and protector.
Located at 50 kilometers from Barcelona, the mountain of Montserrat is seen from far after few minutes of getting out of the city. Once there, in a short walk, we’ll find out some of the most important spots of the sanctuary.
The magnificent views are mixed with few chapels and many contemporary art pieces. The promenade ends at the square in front of the Basilica, where we can still see some parts of the medieval monastery.
During the tour we’ll visit too the Museum of Montserrat*, which is among the best private collections of Catalonia, created thanks to the donations. Where they stand out art pieces of Picasso, El Greco Saint Jerome of Caravaggio. The museum stands out too because of its archaeological collections with pieces acquired by the monks of the monastery to do a museum with pieces that come from spots mentioned in the Bible.
* It could be pieces on loan not exposed at the moment of the tour.
At 1 PM (to confirm at the moment to make the reservation), all visitors and pilgrims arrived to Montserrat meet at the Basilica to assist at singing of the Boys’ Choir, a choir of boys between 8 and 13 years old that are part of the religious services held in honor of the Virgin Mary that have origins in the 15th Century.
After the songs (approximately 10 minutes), we’ll be back to Barcelona.
