From the Imperial Tarraco…

The Roman Tarraco was borned in the 3rd Century B.C., in the frame of the Second Punic War pitted Rome against Cartage for the control of the Western Mediterranean Sea. Soon after, the new foundation became the way of the roman culture to enter in the iberian Peninsula. However,The greatest moment of this Roamn city was in the times of the Empire. Tarraco became so in the capital of Tarraconensis,the largest province int he whole Roman Empire.

We’ll live Barcelona to the South for 100 kilometers to arrive to Tarragona. After passing through Penedès region, famous because of its wine and cavas, we’ll find the Mediterranean Sea. Before arriving to Tarragona, a short stop in the Médol, will let us start to know its history: we’ll talk about its quarry and we’ll see the ancient aqueduct that provided water to the city.

Once in Tarragona, a walgin stroll by the High part of the city will let us discover the remains, some easy to see, of the Roman Tarraco, declared UNESCO Site.

We’ll stroll by the former administrative part of Tarraco where we can see the remains of the walls that surround the city. We’ll see too vestiges of the Provincial Forum and the esplanade where they worshipped, nowaday with the Cathedral, the biggest of the catalan cathedrals built in a transition style from the Romanesque to Gothic. We’ll visit its interior and its cloister, where there are some of the remains of the ancient Roman Temple dedicated to the Emperor Augustus.

We’ll continue our tour to arrive to the Roman Circus, which stands preserved over 2,000 years, protected and hidden by the modern buildings. Soon after we’ll arrive to the sea, where we’ll find the amfitheatre .

… to the nowadays Tarragona

At lunch time, we’ll move to El Serrallo,the fisherman neighbourhood of Tarragona, Today transformed in a nice Maritime district. After lunch,we’ll walk around some of the main streets of the city in order to have a better image of how the city arrived to our days.

In the way back to Barcelona, we’ll take the Vía Augusta, the Roman road that linked Tarraco with Rome. Few kilometers North of Tarragona there is the Arch of Triumph, used to mark the point where the city ended its urban influence in the First Century A.D.
