During the 12th Century, Borderline of Chistians and Muslims of Al Andalus was move hundreds of kilometers to the South.
This movement forced the necessity to repopulate these lands with Christians. That’s the importance of Cistercian monks.
In this shire of Conca de Barberà there’s one of the best preserved monasteries of Europe, the Reial Monastir de Santa Maria de Poblet, declared Human Site by UNESCO.
Along the Middle Ages decame one of the most powerful points of the shire. In the 14th Century, it was said that the Abbot of Poblet could move all around Catalonia without leaving the lans under his control, evidence of how religios and earthly power mix easily in those times. In addition,for centuries was the Royal Pantheon of the Aragon Crown.
Until 1835 it was inhabited and after few years of abandonment, a community of monks settled in the 1940’s.
During this tour we’ll talk about the monastery and the daily life of the monks. We are going to see the kitchen, the refectory, the cloister, the church and the restaured graves of the Aragon Crown Monarchs. We are going to visit the main bedroom of the monks and other rooms that will help you to imagine the hard life in a monasterry of the Middle Ages.
And we are going to stroll around Montblanc, the town where saint George kill the dragon.
Once we end the tour of Poblet monastery, we can move to Montblanc, a little walled town, transformed into a duchal city in the 14th Century that got an important rol in the route that joint the cities of Tarragona and Lleida. Strolling around its streets we are going to find imposing walls, numerous churches and thePlaza Mayor. And, opf course, we are going to talk about the most famous legend of Montblanc, the fighting of saint George against the dragon.
After lunch in a typical restaurant, in order to know the local gastronomy, we’ll come back.
