Santes Creus
During the 12th century, the Christian reconquest rapidly advanced towards the south of the Catalan territory, the so-called “New Catalonia”. The Cistercian order was that charge with repopulating a good part of those territories thanks to the donation of lands that the Earls of Barcelona made to the Cistercian monks. So, a few kilometers away, we find three of the most important monasteries of the late Middle Ages in Catalonia. For their proximity and their conserved condition, they are today a crucial point of cultural tourism in the interior of Catalonia.
One of the most important monasteries founded at that time was the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus that was inhabited uninterruptedly from its foundation until 1835. The visit of the monastery and its surroundings will help us to understand the role that this kind of monasteries had in the history of our land. We will visit some of the rooms of the old monastery, also knowing what was the daily life of the Cistercian monks that lived here: the chapter house, the bedrooms, the cloister … and the abbey church, the best preserved building of the whole, which was Royal Pantheon during the 13th Century that houses inside the tombs of the kings Peter the Great and Jaime II and Blanche d’Anjou.
